This week in Spanish class, we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month! Our kindergarten students had the chance to learn about the Spain-España flag and discover the origin of the Spanish language. Third Graders can earn "Panther Points" for different positive things they accomplish during school. After collecting twenty points, these students get to choose a reward. This Third Grader's choice was to go read to his younger brother's PreK 3s class. What a wonderful treat for all the children! Our PreK 3s students practiced building "Mat Man" together and then we created a fun and tasty version during snack! Our 4th Graders celebrated National Poetry Day yesterday by participating in an attempt at the Guinness World Record for the Largest Poetry Lesson in multiple venues. This year's theme was about "counting" - these students brainstormed things they can count and then the things that "count" in their lives. Our Fifth Graders are going back in time and reading Washington Irving's short story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by lantern light. After reading, the students will write and perform a play foretelling what happens next in this famous tale. Ms. Holzrichter's Kindergarten class practiced counting dots to ten using the Marcy Cook Early Math Curriculum. Some scenes from a PreK 3s class this week! Mrs. Lane’s class prepared a yummy fruit salad - each student helped cut up fruit. We are so proud of these talented chefs! These students are also learning about colors and today they experimented with mixing primary colors to make secondary colors. It’s fun to see all the fine motor skills at work!

Wesley Prep's PreK 4s classes participated in a week of apple investigation. Students weighed and measured their apples, performed a sink or float experiment, and identified all the different colors of their sample apples! These types of science lessons promote problem solving, curiosity, hand-eye coordination, listening, and sensory skills. Mrs. Pipes took our Second Grade scientists outside for a lesson on living vs. non-living things. Using observation (a key step in the scientific method), they spotted living things such as turtles, birds, insects, trees, and various plants. For non-living things, they found rocks, water, weather, and more. WP Fifth Graders participated in a hands-on science experiment today - discovering which types of matter will sink or float. Curiosity was piqued as they made their predications. Spotlight on a WP Graduate: Last year's Princess Anna from our end of year musical, "Frozen Jr." was just cast as a lead in Parish's "Singing in the Rain"! Our graduates are well-prepared academically and socially, and have the confidence to take risks and become leaders in their new middle school environments. WP Fourth Graders had an exciting introduction to learning how to play the recorder! They practiced proper finger placement for the notes B, A, and G, and by the end of class had produced a beautiful tone. Our toddlers celebrated the start of school and the start of fall by creating apple art. Early Childhood Art develops lots of important skills - color recognition, creativity, multi-sensory engagement, and fine-motor skills. For example, the "pincer grasp" is a fine-motor milestone that involves holding an object between the thumb and index finger.
